The importance of probiotics and prebiotics for your gut health

A healthy gut flora is essential for proper digestion, a strong immune system and even for our mental health. Two terms often mentioned in relation to gut health are probiotics and prebiotics. But what exactly are probiotics and prebiotics and why are they so important for your gut?

Probiotics

Probiotics are live microorganisms, usually "good" bacteria, that are beneficial to your gut when consumed in adequate amounts. They help restore balance to the intestinal flora, support healthy digestion and can even strengthen the immune system. Foods such as our Fermented vegetables, yogurt, kefir, kombucha.... are rich in probiotics.

Benefits of fermented greens

  • They contain many different microbes, diversity is super important in your gut microbiome! This distinguishes Fermented vegetables from probiotic pills, where the diversity is lower.
  • The microbes have already digested and transformed the fermented food a bit, making it a bit easier for us humans to digest. For people with irritable bowel or digestive problems, this is a big advantage.
  • Fermentation creates substances that are health-promoting. Substances you cannot find in normal non-fermented foods.
  • Fermentation can increase the amount of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.
  • A diet high in fermented products can lead to lower inflammatory levels.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics, on the other hand, are plant fibers that serve as food for the good bacteria in your gut. They help promote the growth and activity of these beneficial bacteria. Foods such as oats, nuts, seeds, kernels and whole grains are good sources of prebiotics.

Our granolas are a good source of prebiotics, in a wide variety. They contain 14 different types of fiber and we even added a prebiotic fiber, this is extra good food in for the bacteria in your gut!

By including both probiotics and prebiotics in your diet, you can support the diversity and balance of your gut flora. This can lead to better digestion, a stronger immune system and even have a positive effect on your overall health and well-being.

It is important to strive for a varied diet that includes both probiotics and prebiotics, and to listen to your body's signals. If you notice your digestion improving and you feel better overall, chances are your gut is also benefiting from the intake of these good bacteria. Be sure to try Go Guts' starter pack, that way you can spend a month testing for yourself how it feels to eat fermented greens and a wide variety of fiber from our granolas!
